She Created Magic All Around Her Mixed Media Art by Design Team Member Tamara Dinius
She Created Magic All Around Her was painted in honor of the special people that bring joy and magic into our life; the kind of magic that creates life-long memories. It takes a certain person to create these kinds of moments and this painting celebrates that person. My hope is that you will look for the magic that lies within you and bring it to life in your painting.
Heart-to-Heart Chat From Me to You
My art is my art. Your art will be your art. They do not need to look alike, nor should they. I want you to do your thing with this. You can use the colors, stencils, and stamps that you already have. Of course, we can all use a few new items in our craft stash so if you want to experiment with what I am using, then by all means do. Craft Warehouse has a unique selection of Dylusion Ink Sprays in some yummy colors! I will warn you though, once you start using Dylusion Ink Sprays you will want them all!
Quick Note For Following My Step-by-Step Process
Much to my daughters chagrin, I think a recipe is nothing more than a suggestion. If I am out of tomato sauce then I will substitute ketchup. If it calls for sour cream and I have mayonnaise in the fridge, then mayo it is. It's either a hit or a miss. I enjoy mixing it up a bit, and who knows, one day I may come up with a killer new recipe. So please use my instructions for this project the way I do a recipe. Experiment, substitute, and just have fun!
This is the right time, the right format, and the right products to begin your journey into mixed media art.
Onward We Go, Let's Get Started!
Step 1
Wet down your substrate (another term for painting surface) with water using a Ranger Mini-Mister. I am using Dylusion's Creative Journal as my substrate but you may want to use watercolor paper, canvas, or something similar. The next step is to apply your favorite ink sprays, I have used Dylusion Ink Sprays in Vibrant Turquoise and Funky Fuchsia. Once applied, I smoosh (I know this isn't an actual word but it is the only word I can think of that fits the action)my two pages together by laying one page on the other and rubbing my hands over them. Separate the pages (here you will ooh and ahh because they look so cool) and let them dry. Once completely dry, take a paintbrush (I used a #4 round) dipped in clear water and let drips of water run down your page. The clear water will remove the inks, leaving some really cool drip lines on your substrate.
Step 2
Create some background interest by applying white acrylic using your favorite stencils randomly throughout your painting (I have used Luscious Leaves and Letter Jumble stencils from Dylusions). I have also used Daler Rowney Metallic Brown 721and Violet 450 to add some contrast.
Step 3
I have added random circles for additional interest and texture. You can use bubble wrap, stencils, needle punch canvas, and just about anything that creates a pattern. Stroll the aisle of your local Craft Warehouse, dollar store, or thrift shop to find some really cool items. Apply white acrylic paint to create contrast against the darker background. Please don't get too concerned about the product used in this step, you are just creating background interest. Texture good, striving for perfection bad. Remember, this is about having fun!
The great thing about Dylusion Ink Sprays are that they re-activate with water allowing you to obtain some dynamic movement within your painting. However, there are times when you don't want this to occur. To eliminate the inks from re-activating we need to create a barrier. This can be done by using a spray fixative or applying clear gesso or matte medium over the inks. I have lightly brushed matte medium over the entire painting. Use a light hand or your inks may start to move and cover your drip lines. Allow to dry.
Step 4
Step 5
Cut out your leaves and flowers. Notice they are not precise, we are looking for a random artistic approach at this point. Repeat after me, "Random artistic approach good, symmetrical spacing boring"!
Step 6
This step is optional. I drew a rough sketch of a girl and based her in with Daler Rowney Portrait Pink 573 acrylic paint. I colored her hair with Burnt Umber. I encourage you to be fearless and give this a try. If it doesn't work out, cover her up with a large flower and keep on going.
Step 7
Start gluing down your flowers and leaves. You can use glue, gel medium, modge-podge, etc. The choice is yours. Remember to think "random" at this point. We don't want wall flowers. Remember your middle school dance? We don't want all the orange flowers lined up against one edge, and all the pink flowers lined up against the other. Add brown to the center of the flowers.
Step 8
Hand lettering! I used to teach calligraphy and yet I struggle with simple hand lettering on my art work. I think it's because I am afraid of ruining a piece by misspelling a word or having goofy spacing. So this is my secret (and millions of other mixed media artists), we write on tissue paper, deli paper, rice paper, vellum paper, etc. and then adhere it to our artwork. Isn't this AWESOME! If I make a mistake lettering I just throw it out and start over.
So grab yourself a pastrami on rye sandwich and keep the deli paper it's wrapped in. Or better yet, check out the Craft Warehouse paper section for some really cool vellum papers.
I typically use waterproof Sharpie markers for my hand lettering but you will find many other brands work well too. This is where experimenting on different papers using a variety of pens will be important. Once you are happy with your lettering, adhere it to your artwork. Again, experimenting with the different papers and glues is crucial. I find that a less watery adhesive works better on lighter weight paper. I will brush on my adhesive and then use a credit card or room key to smooth out the paper. This works really well for me and seems to eliminate bubbles and wrinkles.
Step 9
We are almost at the finish line. Hydrate and keep up the good work(water, coffee, or a nice red wine will do the trick)! I used a regular gel writing pen to add cross hatching and outlining to my flowers and leaves . The white highlights have been done using a fine and extra fine white Sharpie marker. The white markers were also used to add highlighting to the lettering. I used some water-downed white acrylic to add the splatters and background markings.Lightly spray your finished product with a clear fixative.
Take a step back and look at what you just created! You can now become a magical moment collector and start spreading magic of your own.

Image Transfer in 4 Easy Steps!
It’s not everyday that I make a project that brings my family to tears in my bathroom. Yep, you heard it right. At least they are closer to the tissue. A couple of months ago we changed the colors of our bathroom and I bought some towels that I love. The towels are teals in three shades that create a hombre effect in my towel closet. With brown walls I feel like I’m at the beach in the sand and the waves. To add to this feeling I decided I wanted to capture an image of my kids at the beach when they were young by transferring a photo to a wood board and sanding it to look like weathered wood. Yes, this is where the crying comes in. They are so cute when they are little.
Supplies Used:
Decorating Your Life Vinyl
Americana Décor Chalky Paint Treasure & Primitive
Americana Décor Image Transfer Medium
2 Sierra Pacific Wood Canvas’
Sand Paper
Foam Brushes
Directions:
Step One-Prep the Board: When the photo is transferred to your board, the board will show through any places on your photo that is white or light in color. I decided I wanted the wood grain to lightly show through my photo. To do this I coated the bottom layer of my Sierra Pacific board in Primitive Americana Décor Chalky Paint and let it dry. (This paint is amazing. I kept coming back to the board to pet it. It was so soft. ) Then I placed my Decorating Your Life vinyl saying on the layer of Primitive and then mixed Treasure Americana Chalky Paint and Primitive Chalky Paint to match my towels and painted over the vinyl to layer the words under my photo for a weathered look. Then I sanded the board with some fine-grained sandpaper to get a distressed look and see the wood grain.

Step Two-Prep the Photo: You will need to print your photo on regular copy paper on a toner printer. Make sure to reverse your image so local landscapes or words do not appear backwards after transferring. You can easily print these photos at your local office supply store. Lastly, trim the photo to remove any of the unprinted white edges.
Step Three-Transfer Photo: Lay a thick layer of the Americana Décor Image Transfer Medium over your project and your photo. You want to make sure every piece of the photo touches the medium. Then lay your photo face down on the medium on the board and smooth out your photo making sure not to puncture your photo and to get out any bubbles. I used a rolling pin then rubbed it down with my fingers. Wipe away any extra Transfer Medium from the edges with a damp rag. (Don’t forget to wash your tools) Let dry overnight.
Step Four-Remove Backing and Apply Finish: It’s time to get messy. (After looking at my floor, I should have taken this outside for this step.) Get a wet rag and lay it over your project until the paper is wet enough to start seeing the image then carefully rub the back off your photo. If you want a distressed look, feel free to use an old washcloth. If you are going for a clean picture with no nicks or scrapes use your fingers and carefully rub it off. You may have to repeat this several times to clean off all the backing. After you gently remove all the paper backing and your vinyl, sand if desired and coat the project with one more layer of the Americana Décor Image Transfer Medium to prevent scratches.
Step Five-Don’t Show Your Mom: If you do, you may end up making two sets…

DIY Flower Arrangements and Gold Glitter Vases
I love flower arrangements. Fresh flowers during the summer is something I wish I could have all the time! They can be really expensive to buy at the store so I make my own as often as I can!
Another thing I also love is glitter. I just don't love it all over my hands, face, and home. So when I heard about Krylon's Glitter Blast I had to try it. It is glitter in a spray can. The can is filled with adhesive and glitter - all you have to do is point and spray! I like that!
For this handmade vase, I just grabbed a mason jar and got to work! Scroll down to find out how to make your own vase and then how to create your own flower arrangement for less!
Supplies:
Mason Jar
Krylon Gold Spray Paint
Krylon Gold Glitter Blast
American Crafts Twine
Flowers
Vase Directions:
1. Spray the outside of the jar with gold spray paint. Do a couple of coats for a good application.
2. When dry, spray the outside of the jar with gold Glitter Blast. Make sure the jar is completely covered. Let dry.
3. Tie a piece of twine around the lip of the jar.
One of my favorite DIY projects is creating my own flower arrangements! I got several bouquets of flowers from my local Trader Joe's for only $20! Here is how you can create your own flower arrangements using your own handmade vases!
Flower Arrangement Directions:
1. Open up all the bouquets and remove the flowers from the rubber bands and packaging.
2. If your flowers come with flower food, disperse the food out evenly to all your vases. Fill your vases up half way with water.
3. Sort your flowers on the counter so you can see what you have.
1 - Foliage
2 - Place smaller groupings of flowers together (like smaller Daisies, Asters, etc).
3 - Large flowers will be used last, so place them on their own.
4. Using the foliage (branches of leaves) first, cut to desired length (for a mason jar I cut between 9"-10"). Putting one branch into the jar at a time criss-cross the stems into the vase. You are going to be creating a homemade frog this way. You should have about four or more pieces crossed into the vase.
5. Use smaller flower stems next (labeled 2 in the picture above) and make sure all the leaves are removed before adding them to the vase. Cut to the same length as before. Add one stem at a time twisting the stem into the jar so that it will slide into your homemade frog. Place the stems evenly around the vase.
6. For stems that have a lot of flowers attached (like a bunch of Daisies), remove them from the main stem so that you get more bang for your buck! Tuck these into your arrangement by twisting the stem again into the homemade frog.
7. Lastly, pick a favorite large flower (labeled 3 in the picture above) and cut to the same length as your other flowers. Find the front of your vase and twist the stem into the vase at the focal point of your arrangement. Make sure if you are using any Roses that all the leaves are removed before adding them to the vase.
*Note: For mason jar arrangements 1 large flower is enough. For large arrangements, you can add several large flowers to draw attention to the front of the arrangement. Have fun with it! This is a great way to make beautiful floral displays around your home for less!
